Sintra  ( Portuguese pronunciation:  [ˈsĩtɾɐ] ) is a town in  Sintra Municipality  in  Portugal , located in the  Grande Lisboa  subregion and the  Lisbon Region . The town is a  UNESCO   World Heritage Site  on account of its 19th century  Romantic  architecture. It has a population of c. 33,000 inhabitants. Sintra has become a major tourist attraction, with many day-trippers visiting from nearby  Lisbon . Attractions include the fabulous  Pena Palace  (19th c.) and the castle  Castelo dos Mouros  (8th or 9th century, reconstructed in the 19th century) with a breath-taking view of the  Sintra-Cascais Natural Park , and the summer residence of the kings of Portugal  Palácio Nacional de Sintra  (largely 15th/16th century), in the town itself. Cascais  ( Portuguese pronunciation:  [kɐʃˈkajʃ] ) is a coastal town in  Cascais Municipality  in  Portugal , 30 kilometres west of  Lisbon , with about 35,000 residents. It is a cosmopolitan suburb of the Portuguese capital and one of the richest  municipalities in Portugal . The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal's  royal family  in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Nowadays, it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists. It is located in the Estoril Coast (named after  Estoril , a  civil parish ), in the  Greater Lisbon  subregion. [ 1 ]  It has an airport for  general aviation  serving the  Lisbon Region  in Tires (S. Domingos de Rana),  Aeroporto Municipal de Cascais . Salamanca is a city in western Spain, the capital of the province of Salamanca, which belongs to the autonomous community of Castile and Leon (Castilla y León). The Old City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is situated about 200 km west of Madrid and 80 km east of the Portuguese border. With a population around 160,000 it is the third most populated city in Castile and Leon, following Valladolid and Burgos. Salamanca is known both for its monumental sights and the University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1218 and is the oldest university in Spain and the fifth oldest western university. With its 30,000 students, the university is, together with tourism, the economic engine of the city. Salamanca is also known for the teaching of the Spanish language; in this field, Salamanca supplies 16% of the market within Spain and attracts thousands of foreign students.
